-Quote from George Washington-

"When the government fears the people, we have liberty, but when the people fear the government, we have tyranny." - George Washington, American Revolutionary and first President of the USA

Hucklberry Finn

Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) wrote Huckleberry Finn as an indictment towards slavery.  Slavery during Twain's time was legal in southern states.  Old Whitey would break up slave families by selling some slaves.

The cotton gin almost made slavery unprofitable, but slavery continued.  The underground railroad began as a way to free states.  The Dred Scott decision deemed slaves as property.

Fredrick Douglass wrote an abolitionist paper called the North Star.  He went, when he was a slave to Covey, an infamous slave breaker.

There were slave codes in force in the South.  After the 13th and 14th Amendments were ratified, the slave codes eventually evolved into the Jim Crow laws.

Needless to say, Mexican immigrants are paid slave wages in California and Arizona.
