Hundreds Protest Drug War & Mass Incarceration

Hundreds of people turned out at San Francisco City Hall on Friday, June 17th, to participate in the "Communities Rising to End the Drug War and Mass Incarceration" rally and march to protest the 40 year "war on drugs" and continued criminalization of the poor, the addicted and communities of color.

The protest then marched to the state and federal buildings nearby. Working and poor people struggling with addiction fill the prisons and jails of the US. This country has the dubious distinction of having the largest per capita incarcerated population in the world. Protesters called for drug policy reform that would emphasize rehabilitation versus the current policy based on punitive measures. They also demanded human rights for prisoners isolated in the notorious Pelican Bay Prison in Northern California.

From the open publishing newswire: Helena, MT - On the morning of July 12th, six activists from Earth First! and Northern Rockies Rising Tide have risked arrest by occupying Governor Schweitzer's office in an act of non-violent civil disobedience. The activists have locked their arms in a mock oil pipeline made out of PVC plastic pipe. In the wake of the Silvertip spill, Governor Schweitzer has publicly chastised Exxon Mobil, while simultaneously continuing to promote the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, megaload shipments bound for the Alberta Tar Sands and other extreme fossil fuel projects throughout the state. "If the Governor has his way, Montana will be transformed into what is essentially an energy extraction colony for Big Oil. The Silvertip spill is simply a short preview of what this would mean for the lives and livelihood of all Montanans," says Great Falls native Peter Dolan, one of the eight occupying the office. Activists wearing "lock boxes" at office of Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer. Activists inside the Capitol are also demanding that Schweitzer stand up to TransCanada and other international criminal organizations by publicly opposing Alberta Tar Sands exportation.

We need to fight to legalize the ROMS for obsolete consoles, and MAME games produced before a reasonable year (I would say 1997).  We can boycott all games protected by the ESA, and even hang a ROMS legalization banner from a freeway overpass or from a building. 

The Open Source software community can make games similar to these retro arcade games (Such as Donkey Kong, Zaxxon, Berzerk or others).   The software patents for these particular games expired.

Homeless Camp out at Rose Parade for right 2 survive

Right 2 Survive put out a call to pitch a tent in downtown Portland to support the rights of the homeless to survive. This peaceful direct action raised awareness that there are not enough shelters or resources for the homeless. On any given day, there are 1,500 people sleeping in the streets, with nowhere to go, but city laws forbid them to set up tents. For 1 day only before the Rose Parade, the city allows everyone to camp out. For homeless activists, it's unfair that people are allowed to camp out for fun, but not for survival.

For most people, being homeless is one of their biggest fears. Yet millions of Americans have experienced homelessness. The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty reported in 2007 that about 3.5 million people have experienced being homeless, 1.5 million of them children.
Homelessness is on the rise, as thousands of Americans have lost their housing and jobs in recent years. Often, the authorities respond, not with more support, but with criminalizing and increasing assaults on the homeless people, and cuts on social programs that provide them with support. In Portland, there are about 1,500 people sleeping in the streets on a given day. There are just not enough shelters and support for them.
To call attention to their plight, Right2Survive, a group of 9 people who are homeless, formerly homeless and allies, put out a call to folks to pitch a tent in downtown Portland on June 10th. Soon after 10 AM, about 50 homeless and supporters, set up camp on SW 4th Avenue and Washington. In no time, tents were erected on several city blocks. A huge sign stated the purpose of this action: Legal Camping Now; Land, Not Jail. A table with coffee, water, soft drinks and food was set up, and all day long, many homeless and non-homeless people stopped by and were fed. We were treated to fresh fruit, sandwiches, burritoes, cookies, donuts, chocolate cake and hot soup, thanks to all who cooked and/or donated food! Many curious people talked to us, and were given leaflets explaining the purpose of Right 2 Survive. A couple of police came and tried to evict us, but we stood our ground. Shortly, the city attorney appeared, but she too left, since for once, the "law" was on our side.
Ibrahim Mubarak is a member of Right2Survive, and one of the founders of Dignity Village. He informed me that the goal of this peaceful direct action was to protest against the city's anti-camping law, which makes camping illegal for homeless folks. Yet the city allows camping for all people for 1 day before the Rose Parade. "The city allows people to camp out for fun, but not for survival," he said. He added that the homeless are vulnerable to assault, especially women. One of the homeless' biggest complaints and fear is assault from the police. Many have told me that the cops often harass them at night, waking them up, searching their tents, and throwing away their only belongings, their sleeping bags, tents, papers, and things they value. Ibrahim said that people want to camp together, not only for comraderie, but for protection against violence and rape.
Leo Rhodes, a Street Roots poet and board member, said one of the biggest obstacles the homeless confront is the negative stereotypes that the media perpetrate. "Many of us have jobs, and are not drug addicts or have mental problems," he said. "Every March 31st, many shelters are closed because they think that the homeless won't die in the summer. We've tried to meet with city officials, but their solution is "Out of sight, out of mind." They want to sweep the homeless off the streets, because we're an "eyesore," but there's nowhere for us to go. We're here today to let everyone know that we're human beings too, and we need shelter."
The media showed up, including FOX. They interviewed Ibrahim, Leo and many others.
The next day, hundreds of people, who showed up for the Rose Parade, became informed of the Right 2 Survive camping. They saw the signs, including "100,000 Homeless Vets on the streets every night" when Ibrahim and others walked up several city blocks carrying the signs. When the Oregon National Guard float passed by, Ibrahim walked next to them, carrying a sign: "Support the troops? Give them homes," and "Beds, not bombs. 100,000 homeless vets."
Several homeless activists came down from Seattle to support this action. They talked about the growing tent cities in Seattle, Nickelsville (named after the scumbag mayor), Tent City 2 and 3. It's good to see such solidarity among the homeless and their allies. This was a very successful direct action, and more actions are planned in the future, because homelessness is not an "eyesore" that can be swept out of sight. It's a growing problem that more and more people will experience as the economy, our civil rights and our country are being destroyed by rapacious corporate power and a government that serves its interests, instead of the people's.

Protest over Portland Police shootings

Around 30 people marched from the Hollywood transit centre to the Southeast Portland police precinct in order to demonstrate against the recent continued police involved shootings and deaths. Portland, Oregon, 03/01/2010

The march began just before 9pm, heading to Sandy Blvd. then heading east and south on NE 47th street until it arrived at the precinct.

A number of police cars eventually showed up as the protesters crossed the Banfield expressway on 47th. The police were met with numerous bins blocking their path behind the protest that had been tipped over and sprawled across the road.

One Wells Fargo on Sandy Blvd. was spray painted with an 'Anarchy' symbol whilst another person smashed a window with a brick.

As the protesters approached the Southeast Precinct on Burnside, numerous police in riot gear began to block off the entrances with their cars and heavily armed officers.

The protest, organised last minute, was in response to the recent surge in officer involved shootings.

On Saturday January 1st an officer fired a shot outside a Portland nightclub. His aim, which missed, was at a suspect who killed the bouncer for Club 915, Ruben Mata.

On Monday December 27th police fired a taser, beanbag shotgun and an AR-15 rifle at Southwest Portland man Marcus Lagozzino who was wielding a machete. The suspect remains hospitalised in critical condition.

On Friday December 17th, officers shot at least 16 rounds, killing Darryl Ferguson in the hallway outside his apartment in Southeast, after he reportedly threatened neighbors with a gun that turned out to be a fake weapon.

Mayor of Portland, Sam Adams, who also plays the police commissioner role has said in response to the officer involved shootings that the bureau would remain "dedicated to continued improvement" in maintaing law and order in as "peaceful a way as possible."

Last year saw many deaths from officer involved shootings, concerning but not limited to mentally unstable and homeless people.

On January 29th an unarmed black male, Aaron Campbell was shot in the back with an AR-15 by officer Ronald Frashour whilst he was surrendering to the police. Reportedly officers had removed their ear pieces, shooting first with bean bag rounds then releasing a K-9 attack dog before the fatal shooting.

Jack Collins, a distraught homeless man with self inflicted wounds was shot dead in Hoyt Arboretum on March 22nd after he failed to drop a razor blade he was holding. Four shots were fired with the fatal blow striking an artery in his Pelvis.

James P. Chasse Jr., a 42-year-old man with schizophrenia was knocked to the ground after running from officers who suspected he was urinating in a street. He later died in police custody from blunt force trauma to the chest on September 17th 2006.

Another case of officers not being able to control a situation effectively happened in November when a 12 year old girl was shot with a beanbag on a MAX tram platform after she punched an officer in the mouth whilst they struggled to take her into custody.

Also photos of the right wingers to show how utterly confused and misled they are, in spite of their real anger/grievances. Sometimes, you don't know whether to laugh or weep! What will it take for ordinary Americans to wake up and stop being conned/manipulated by the elites and their pundits.

Well, there were over 5,000 Obama supporters, 100 right wing Tea Party/Americans for Prosperity, and 50 of us at the protest two days ago when Obama came to town to stump for Kitzhaber. But the progressive activists from Veterans for Peace, PCASC, SUPER, ISO, immigrant rights groups and others bravely stood their ground in spite of their small numbers, and did their best to get their message out. No more wars and occupations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Pakistan, no more corporate giveaways and bailouts, Money for jobs and education, and no more voting for the two-party con men, Democrats and Republicans, soaking in corporate money and corruption. If we want real change, we've got to do it ourselves, not depend on politicians, leaders and cheerleaders. Look at what the French students and workers are doing right now to fight back against the cutbacks and attacks on them by the ruling elites. Strike, Blockade, Sabotage! Enough said!

Call for Organization of Protest at the Oregon Convention Center, Wednesday, October 20, 2010

President Barack Obama has scheduled a visit to Portland on behalf of Democratic Party gubernatorial nominee John Kitzhaber. Obama will be speaking to 10,000 or more pre-registered guests at the Oregon Democratic Party-sponsored function in an attempt to bolster the Kitzhaber campaign.

There is a handful of future public school educators organizing to send a message to Obama regarding his Administration's endorsement of the recent film "Waiting For 'Superman'" and the broader agenda it promotes to further corporatize the public education system in the United States for the benefit of multinational corporations that need semi-skilled labor at ever-lower prices. We plan on posting up outside the Convention Center with signs and loud voices.

Short-Changed in the Obama-nation? Tell Barack About it.

On October 20, President Obama will speak at the Oregon Convention Center to stump for Democrats only.

A counter protest is planned for 3:30!

Meet at the NE corner of NE Oregon St (800 Block NE) and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, across the street from the entrance to the Convention Center.

Saying we are disappointed in the current administration would be a massive understatement.

We've been short-changed and hope-winked.

Whether it's the continued wars, enlarged occupations, Wall Street bailouts, or rearranging the deck chairs on various sinking ships (the economy, healthcare, global warming, and others too numerous to mention)--we all have something that needs to be said.

Come out to the Oregon Convention Center and let the President know how you feel. Raise awareness that there is a choice other than the corrupt ways of the Democrats and Republicans who consistently bow to their corporate paymasters and ignore the will of the people.

Obama now complains that corporations are funnelling hundreds of millions of dollars, from secret sources, into Republican campaigns. But the Democrats could have prevented that by using their majorities in the House and Senate to require disclosure or even to add 2 more members to the Supreme Court and reveerse the Citizens United decision. But they did not, because the Democrats thought they would be the ones riding the corporate gravy train. After all, they got more corporate money than the Republicans in 2008 (reported the Wall Street Journal). But the corporations know better. They are buying Congressional seats for real Republicans who openly adhere to their agenda.

But doesn't action in the Senate require 60 votes? No. The Justices curcial to the Citizens United decision were themselves confirmed by 52 votes (Thomas) and 58 votes (Alito). Action requires 60 votes only when the majority party Senators want to fool people into believing they are impotent to protect the public interest. Impotence allows them to argue, "Make us stronger with a bigger majority." But the problem is not impotence. It is their allegiance to big money, which bigger majorities would not change.

Yes, we have to deal with these realities:

there will be massive security and we may not get our message out as directly as we'd like
there will be protestors there from the Tea Party and other communities who do not seek peace or economic and social justice
no matter how large of a crowd we have, the mainstream media will say we're a "handful"
Over 40,000 people flooded Waterfront Park in 2003 to try to stop the invasion of Iraq. About 100 stalwarts came out in the rain last week to say the US must complete its withdrawal from Iraq, get out of Afghanistan, and redirect its financial priorities.

We have a chance now to make our message clear and be sure that the President and his supporters, as well as candidate Kitzhaber, hear our voices.

We will have the signs about "Get the Hell Out of Iraq," "Stop the War on Afghanistan" and "Close Guantanamo," among others. Those will not be the messages carried by others planning to protest.

I hope to see you out there on Wednesday. We've got the word out to other groups who may or may not also be a part of this call to action.

Report Back by Peace and Justice Works- Thanks to all the hearty individuals who braved the rain and rallied in the South Park Blocks on Saturday, marching over an hour to our teach-in at PSU! I counted about 100 people in the park and between 100-150 marching down the park blocks, toward the waterfront, and back up Broadway. It was a spirited crowd who didn't let a little "Oregon sunshine" get in the way of getting out the message "Money for Jobs and Education, Not War and Occupation!" The rally featured music by Morris McClellan; guest speaker Nate from the Veterans for Peace national board talking about Afghanistan and Iraq; local JL Dunn of Iraq Veterans Against the War and VFP Chapter 72; Meredith Reese of the International Socialist Organization (ISO) on the economic disaster that is the USA; Will Seaman of Jewish Voice for Peace about the continued failure of US policy in Israel/Palestine; Megan Hise, coordinator for the Portland Central America Solidarity Committee and Ismerelda Gonzalez, a PCC student about US policy in Latin America and the recent raids on activists; and Ali Al Hihi, of Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights (SUPER), explaining how the Qu'ran is not a template for hatred, and asking why, then, all the Islamophobia? Host Rebecca Nay, interim evening news director at KBOO 90.7 FM, hosted the rally and kept the energy going, braving mud and rain to make sure the show would go on. The march went by a surprising number of pedestrians given the inclement weather. The No War Drum Corps kept a steady and upbeat pace as the "End Wars" banner made the 30-plus-block trek, stopping at the World Trade Center to denounce Wall Street's war on workers and the Oregonian building to call for "no more lies!" At PSU, the teach-in began with a 7-member panel, hosted by Nicole Bowmer of the ISO. There was a crowd of between 70-100 people there, many of whom were not on the march--you could tell because their clothes and hair were dry. Presenting were: Zaher Wahab, an Afghan-American Education Professor at Lewis & Clark College, who has spent about four months a year in Afghanistan since 2002; Zaher called for a withdrawal of US troops; Israa Hasani, an Iraqi-American community activist, gave the historical picture of US policy in Iraq which led to the rise of the Baath Party (and Saddam Hussein), the deadly sanctions and war of 1990/1991-2003, and the invasion and occupation which are still ongoing; Tasha Triplett, a Senior at Portland State University and a member of SUPER, gave a scathing report card on the US supporting the apartheid regime in Israel--that is, while Palestinians are treated as second class citizens, there is no true pathway to peace; Robin Hahnel, a visiting professor in the department of economics at PSU, made the connection between the failing US economy and what he called the "imperialist wars" overseas; Goudarz Eghtedari, director of the American Iranian Friendship Council and an Iranian-American, described the efforts inside the Obama administration to push for war on Iran, warning that an attack by the US was more likely than one by Israel. Alexis Ball, former field director for Witness for Peace in Mexico, broadly outlined US involvement in Latin America and focused deeply on the carnage caused by the so called "war on drugs" fueled both by US demand for drugs and arms supplied by our government to theirs; Kate Chester, community relations manager at Portland Community College's Sylvania Campus, described her work with the Institute for Christian-Muslim Understanding and the Arab American Cultural Center of Oregon in trying to combat anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim sentiments through dialogue and respect. At about 2:30, the remaining crowd broke into three "workshops": One focusing on Iran and scapegoating which included Kate and Goudarz; one about the economy which included Professor Hahnel, Tim Koch of the ISO and Pam Allee from the Oregon Community for War Tax Resistance/War Resisters League; and the third combining Afghanistan, Iraq and Israel/Palestine and featuring Prof. Wahab, Israa, JL Dunn, Kelly Campbell of Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility and September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Wael Elasady of SUPER and MaryAlecia Briggs of Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights. In the Smith Ballroom, during the teach-in, about 10 organizations had literature tables to inform the crowd further. Comments from attendees leads me to believe that the event was well-received, particular compliments went to the panelists. I don't know if there was any mainstream media coverage beyond a great interview with Tasha on KOIN-6 at 6 PM on Saturday. I saw a few recognizable local videographers and photographers at each part of the event. We did, much to my surprise, get some pre-event coverage at the Willamette Week blog ( http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2010/10/08/anti-war-rally-this-saturday) and at KGW ( http://www.kgw.com/lifestyle/weekend/Weekend-Guide-Oct--104178174.html). It was a good thing so many of the cosponsors had created web pages about the event, as our website went down for several hours on both Friday and Saturday mornings!!! So, from the folks who came early to set up, to the ones who slogged equipment through the mud and the others who emptied the ballroom when it was all over, to the many cosponsors and endorsers (especially the PSU student groups ISO and SUPER, the First Unitarian Church, PPRC and KBOO!!!) a warm thanks from us here at Peace and Justice Works. Let's hope that the cumulative effect of these educational events will be to bring all the troops home, and get money directed to human needs, not war!!!

"Protesters squatting in a vacant Tenderloin residential hotel may have set up blockades to thwart invading cops, police said.

More than a dozen police officers stormed the building at 587 Eddy St. Monday in an attempt to flush out an unknown number of homeless advocates who broke into the building Sunday and have refused to leave.

But as of noon, cops said they struggled to make contact with the protesters. Officers dealt with a number of obstacles and blockades that may have been intentionally placed inside the building, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak said.

The activists occupied the building, formerly the Leslie Hotel, as part of the firstWorld Homeless Day. A rally for World Homeless Day was held in Civic CenterSunday.

Miguel Carrera, a spokesman for the activist group, Creative Housing Liberation, said there were 18 people inside the building, and that they would remain there until police remove them.

Officers planned to go room-to-room in all six floors of the building. They hoped to boot out trespassers and also scan for any damage the activists may have caused, Andraychak said.

Police shut down streets surrounding the building due to the operation. Muni had to reroute the 31-Balboa bus line due to the street closure. (And the 19 Polk).

Cops have been on scene since Sunday around 5 p.m., after a citizen called 911 to report that around 50 people were blocking traffic in front of the vacant building.

The activists say it is a crime that there are more vacant housing units in San Francisco than homeless people. They claimed in a press release that there were between 6,000 and 15,000 homeless people in The City last year, and that more than 36,000 units are currently vacant.

The activists colored the run-down building with several protest signs, one reading "Empty homes are for people too" and "Affordable housing RIP." Officers camped out in front of the building overnight." (1)

The police say this is nothing more than a routine event that "happens all the time", but if that's true then why does it never make the local papers? The homeless, the sick and the jobless are everywhere on the streets here; yet absolutely nothing is being done about it. Meanwhile a program to install two handicapped ramps on each corner of the neighborhoods (where there was already one ramp) is moving ahead at a cost that is surreal. Thousands have nothing to eat, no medical care and nowhere to sleep, so where does the City of San Francisco choose to spend millions of what little money they do have: Not on creating more jobs or on providing more food! No they chose instead to build more convenient ramps for the handicapped: Because there's money to be made in the kick-backs for the concrete that's required. So the Depression continues unabated; and the rich get richer while the poor and the disenfranchised are left to starve.

It's the same story nationally with the FORECLOSURE-CRISIS that is not being treated like the death blow to millions which it is. When the Savings & Loan Scandal happened that too was ignored until it became apparent that the only way to end it was to federally control and to eliminate the S&L's if there was to be a future for that aspect of banking. The massive criminal-fraud inside the Home Loan Foreclosure scandals makes the S&L debacle look like child's play: Yet Obama and his Czar's who are ultimately in charge of this nightmare are refusing to sanction a nationwide-moratorium on FORECLOSURES, until "the facts" can be clearly understood and corrected.

Incidentally where is Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, on this flashpoint where criminal-behavior has apparently replaced the legal procedures that were supposed to protect us all against what has become common practice in the banking world. Obama and his cabinet appointees are standing against the moratorium while my representative Nancy Pelosi, remains mute!

The banks are making millions, if not billions more on the foreclosure process through the fraudulent sales of these illegally-foreclosed properties, from checks written by the feds to the banks that do not reflect the devalued prices that the properties-in-foreclosure have become. It's a huge scam. Watch this four minute video which explains it all. (2)

What is needed is a nationwide moratorium in all fifty states because the current moratorium in just 23 states allows the banks to file in any of the other 27 states; to do what they cannot do in the 23 affected states. Bank of America has announced that they are declaring a moratorium on all of their foreclosures in all 50 states: So far they are the only bank complying with what must happen if we are to ever untangle this Gordian knot.

Another cruel irony is that Fannie-Mae and Freddie-Mac, two federal institutions that are supposedly there to help people in trouble ¬ are still actively foreclosing on these same contested properties without clear lines of ownership that are required before foreclosure can even be entered into. This is where the problem becomes nightmarish.

The mortgages themselves were subdivided and re-sold; becoming in that process a small part in many different "real-estate-packages" that were then used as collateral for even more loans. So when the banks began to try to foreclose upon an individual mortgage, they could not clearly establish who actually owns the mortgage on any particular piece of property; because of all the subdividing of the property as collateral for other scams. The legal problem comes when a lender tries to foreclose on a property which they cannot prove they own outright. That transaction, when it is carried out is criminal-fraud and it has happened to millions of Americans. A moratorium on foreclosures would allow the necessary time for the banks to correct this practice and clear the records; and to compensate those that have lost everything in this massively fraudulent scam. This cannot go unanswered because it is the very basis for the housing bubble and for the crash that followed its collapse. So where the hell is Pelosi on any of this stuff?

The criminal institutions have already bailed themselves out, time after time, using our money to enrich their own bottom lines. Now its time for us to hold these so-called pillars of the corporate world to account-all the way down to stripping them of all their assets and sending to them to federal prison.

The conversations that are taking place today, around these topics, make it sound like these criminals are guilty of only having "misspoken during some cocktail conversation" ¬ when the truth is everything they've been doing since derivatives and hedge funds first made their appearance on Wall Street has been illegal. Now instead of facing the facts they want this entire shell-game to go on uninterrupted.

These outrageously criminal-insiders need to pay in direct proportion to the damage they have done to so many millions of people: And the politicians that gave them the cover they needed to do this must pay the same way ordinary people would have to pay for any of the thousands of infractions that we are subject-to everyday and in every way. Either there are laws for all of us to follow or there is no law for anyone ¬ only payoffs, kick-backs and illegal schemes that always seem to go unnoticed!
