History of Rock and Roll

In 1955, Rock N' Roll was born.  Bill Haley and the Comets wrote "Rock around the Clock", and Buddy Holly wrote other things.  Another artist wrote "Johnny Be Good", and someone else wrote "Smokin' in the Boys Room", a song that was covered by L.A. band Motley Crue on their Theater of Pain album.  After the 1950's era came the British invasion, in the 1970's Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath started metal, Iron Maiden came in the 1980's, and Metallica and Megadeth invented thrash, even though the first speed metal band was Judas Priest.  Slayer came out a while later with its satanic lyrics, and the 1990's brougt grunge like Alice in Chains and Nirvana.  Rage against the Machine came out in this decade.  As far as punk goes, the Sex Pistols started it in the 1980's, with the Vandals, Crucial Youth, DRI, MDC, as well as the Ramones followed.  This is in memory of KUFO 101.1 Portland, OR.

 AC/DC Let There Be Rock

(A. Young / M. Young / B. Scott)

In the beginning
Back in nineteen fifty five
Man didn't know 'bout a rock 'n' roll show
And all that jive
The white man had the schmaltz
The black man had the blues
No one knew what they was gonna do
But Tschaikovsky had the news
He said let there be sound
There was sound
Let there be light
There was light
Let there be drums
There was drums
Let there be guitar
There was guitar
Let there be rock

And it came to pass
That rock 'n' roll was born
All across the land every rockin' band
Was blowin' up a storm
And the guitar man got famous
The business man got rich
And in every bar there was a superstar
With a seven year itch
There was fifteen million fingers
Learnin' how to play
And you could hear the fingers pickin'
And this is what they had to say
Let there be light
Sound
Drums
Guitar
Let there be rock

One night in the club called the shakin' hand
There was a 42 decibel rockin' band
And the music was good and the music was loud
And the singer turned and he said to the crowd
Let there be rock

God Gave Rock And Roll

God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone
Do you know what you want? You don't know for sure
You don't feel right, you can't find a cure
And you're gettin' less than what you're lookin' for

You don't have money or a fancy car
And you're tired of wishin' on a falling star
You gotta put your faith in a loud guitar

Chorus:
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to everyone (oh yeah)
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone

"Now listen"
If you wanna be a singer, or play guitar
Man, you gotta sweat or you won't get far
Cause it's never too late to work nine-to-five

You can take a stand, or you can compromise
You can work real hard or just fantasize
But you don't start livin' till you realize - "I gotta tell ya!"

God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to everyone
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Put it in your'e Soul

(Instrumental break)

God gave rock and roll to you (to everyone he gave the song to be sung)
Gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to everyone

God gave rock and roll to you (to everyone he gave the song to be sung)
Gave rock and roll to you, saved rock and roll for everyone
Saved rock and roll

Chorus repeats out...

"I know life sometimes can get tough! And I know life sometimes can be a drag!
But people, we have been given a gift, we have been given a role
And that roles name is... Rock and Roll!"
